A new year is starting and have you already thought about what you need to change so that your surroundings change too?
We need to rethink small habits that progressively harm our world, our surroundings and even our health.
How many times do we use plastic for its “practicality”, but leave out the biodegradable products that would save thousands of our generations?
So here I’ve listed 10 habits to change by 2024 if we want sustainable change.
1. Turn your organic waste into compost
Use composting techniques, such as keeping organic waste in separate containers and mixing it with soil and keeping it for 30 days, to turn it into excellent fertilizer to put on your plants and thus avoid excess waste and the accumulation of this waste in landfills.
2. Use more public or shared transport and reduce CO2 consumption
The exaggerated consumption of CO2 has affected us every year, causing nature to give us back polluted air and an increase in global temperatures.
To avoid this, take up cycling or use public transport to get to work, for example, to reduce CO2 consumption.
Consider walking a block to make a purchase. Walking has many benefits, such as improving your health, your mood and your mind.
3. Buy from local producers
Look for fairs or markets near your neighborhood where they sell handmade products. Especially those involved in environmental causes.
Often, the way it’s made involves less environmental impact, because they’re concerned about organic food, free of pesticides and with less risk of contamination.
4. Save your electricity
The large number of household appliances and utilities requires a lot of electricity, so it is necessary to ration its use so that there is no excessive production. Turn off the lights in a room if you don’t need to. Leave sockets unplugged and so on.
5. Store your products in glass, not plastic
Save the glassware you’ve been storing food in at the supermarket, wash it very well, sanitize it with hot water and start storing what you want.
As well as making your food last much longer, you’ll avoid disposing of plastic bags in the environment.
6. Use ecological bags when shopping
Buy eco-bags before you go shopping. Today there are very cute and cheap options so you can carry a lot of things and not waste plastic bags.
7. Before you buy, find out who the producers are
Lately, it’s become widespread to find ways of producing products that use less animal raw materials, fewer preservatives and chemicals, and that don’t test on animals.
So, prioritize buying from these brands, if you think it’s expensive, think about the long-term investment you’re contributing to the planet.
8. More do-it-yourself and less ready-made
Eating fresh produce from your garden, making homemade spices and whatever else you can. It increases your quality of life by eating things from sources you know, with no waste and fewer preservatives.
9. Clean out your closet and donate what you don’t need
Every 6 months it’s a good idea to check what you don’t use anymore, but is in good condition. Then look for needy organizations that will be very useful to them.
10. Have a more minimalist lifestyle
Remember, less is always more! We have 24 hours a day and we can’t always do 100% on everything, so cut down your routine and put your strength into what is most necessary for you. Then you’ll be surprised at how much you’ve been spending on unnecessary items.
Ready to activate sustainable habits?
Finally, adopting sustainable habits is the first step towards caring for planet Earth and also for our health and well-being. By preserving the environment, food will be safer to eat, the air will be pleasant to breathe and we will still have natural resources available for many years to come. However, the quest for preservation is a daily struggle and the people around you need to be made aware of how their habits can change the world.
